Harvard Law freshman Mark Watson, having been cut off by his millionaire dad, tries to fund his education by tinting his skin with tanning pills and passing as African-American. Turning Point: Child Care (Mia)
Turning Point: Child Care (Mia) YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas 2 min - Nov 1, 2007
My name is Mia. I am a single mother with two sons, Tristan and Jordan. Their father is involved in their lives, but not financially stable, so affordable child care is critical for me to be able to care for my children.
The scholarship I receive from the YWCA Child Care and Development program makes all the difference for my family. I work 40-50 hours a week in the Labor & Delivery Department of a local hospital. Because of the scholarship, my children have access to safe, loving environment where they are learning so much.
Without the scholarship, I don't know how I would make ends meet and still provide them with the level of care they deserve. Before I found out about the YWCA, Tristan had a traumatic experience at the daycare he had been going to because they didn't provide children with enough one-on-one attention.
I'm so thankful for no longer having to choose between providing for my family, safe care for my children, and having a little time on the weekends to spend building memories with my children

Turning Point: Child Care (Cheyenne)
Turning Point: Child Care (Cheyenne) YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas 2 min - Apr 3, 2008
My name is Cheyenne. I am 21 years old and a single mother.
In order to provide for my son Zachariah, I work two jobs. I am also attending college to become a registered nurse, so I have to have reliable child care.
Before I came to the YWCA, my family was helping me watch Zachariah. They weren't able to watch him all the time that I needed, so I started looking into other child care options that would be more reliable. I fell in love with the YWCA when I came to tour the center. In addition to being a great environment, I was able to receive a child care scholarship. Without that scholarship I wouldn't be able to afford child care.
Having safe, affordable child care from the YWCA means that I can focus on my jobs and school work without worrying about Zachariah's safety. So through the child care program, the YWCA is helping me to become a better parent.
Without the YWCA, I probably would not have been able to work the hours I need to provide for my family, and I definitely wouldn't be able to continue going to school. I am so thankful for the YWCA because it allows me to provide a better future for Zachariah.

Jake Coco - Graceland
Jake Coco - Graceland
4 min - Apr 19, 2008
ake Coco was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984 and was raised by his single mother Patricia. She introduced him to the violin the tender age of two, and from there Jake began his long voyage down the wave of music. After mastering the violin in only five years, Jake decided to move onto other musical instruments, and at the age of nine, he taught himself guitar and began learning the power of percussion with a drum set that was given to him by his stepfather. By the age of fourteen Jake was already performing on a regular basis at local jazz, blues and rock and roll clubs playing everything he could from the drums and piano to the guitar and the bass.<br /><br />After graduating high school in 2002, Jake was faced with a great decision. He was offered a full scholarship to the "Berklee School of Music" for his spectacular performing abilities on the drums. He was also given another opportunity to tour with his band "Spenser." Following his passion for music and his love of performing, Jake decided to stick beside his band and began gaining all his knowledge and wisdom of performing on the road for the next two years.<br /><br />Once back home, Jake began writing lyrics and producing his own music that would one day become "Broken Hearts and Fairy Tales." Jake was then faced with another difficult decision. He could stay with the band that had become his family, or spread his wings and fly. Jake followed his heart and began his journey as a solo artist, locking himself in his basement studio for nearly four months where he wrote, arranged, produced, mixed and mastered the songs that became the album "Broken Hearts and Fairy Tales."<br /><br />After finishing his album, Jake packed up his life, kissed his mother goodbye, and made his move to Hollywood. Jake's music is a raw and unfiltered view of the lessons he learned in life, thus far.<br />

Cristal Gallegos - FullRide Interview
Cristal Gallegos - FullRide Interview
Unknown length - Jun 8, 2008
Cristal recognized early in life that the key to a better life was education. She has always pushed herself to succeed, not because her mother forced it on her or because she would miss out on extracurricular activities such as softball, but because she wanted to succeed for herself. Cristal has worked hard throughout her career at Tascosa High School to fulfill that goal. She is currently enrolled in the most demanding math courses offered at Tascosa and tied for the second highest grade in the class. Additionally, she has assisted other students with math. Completing a community service requirement for National Honor Society led Cristal to assist one of the math teachers who does math tutoring during lunch and after school. Even after she finished the NHS requirement, she continued to help those students because of her desire to see them succeed. Finances for Cristal’s family have always been tight. She has a car but it is not reliable and her single mother is raising Cristal and her teenage sister. Her mother is unable to assist Cristal with her education or her automobile expenses, so Cristal recognizes the need “to step up.” It is obvious a full scholarship and a dependable car would allow Cristal to prove her independence. However, the self motivation Cristal possesses likely insures she will be a success regardless of the assistance she receives.
